The plate is shaped like a 14-petal chrysanthemum flower, with a curved belly and a ring foot. The interior, exterior, and inside of the ring foot are all glazed in a grayish-blue color, with the glaze surface divided by crackle patterns resembling “golden threads and iron wires.” The unglazed base reveals a black body.

Ancient Chinese artists and ceramic craftsmen were adept at drawing inspiration from nature’s flora and fauna when designing ceramic forms. Shapes such as frogs, tigers, sunflowers, and chrysanthemums were commonly seen. This chrysanthemum petal plate is a prime example of such inspiration, with its precise form, elegantly covered in grayish-blue glaze, and naturally interwoven crackle patterns, making it a quintessential example of ancient ceramics mimicking floral shapes.
